Chapter Twenty-Three
2006
KELLY WALKED INTO THE church, holding her sisterâs hand and guiding her to the second pew behind Loriâs parents. Paige moved robotically, going where Kelly directed her to go. She had hardly spoken a word since the day began. The church was crowded with family and friends, but Paige had ignored them all as they moved down the aisle. Her eyes were focused on the coffin in front of the altar.
It was incomprehensible that her future rested inside that wood structure, never to be able to share in the life they had imagined for themselves. Paige was going to propose as soon as they had moved in together. She had been saving money and wanted to take Lori on their honeymoon to Aruba because Lori had said sheâd always wanted to go there. Lori was going to be a chemical engineer, while Paige would study biochemistry with hopes of doing research for the CDC in Atlanta. Those plans died on the pavement at the corner of Techwood and Tenth Street.
After the burial, Kelly guided Paige into their parentâs house, where family and friends were set to gather. Kelly knew Paige would not be able to handle the crowd, so she led her directly to her bedroom and closed the door behind them. Paige sat on the bed, and Kelly removed her black suit jacket and hung it on the back of her desk chair.
âCan I get you some water, Paige?â
She shook her head no. She hadnât uttered a word in the three hours since the limo had picked them up that morning.
âDo you want to lie down? I can help you out of this suit and into something more comfortable.â
Another head shake.
âPaige, I donât know how to help you through this. What can I do?â
Paige looked at her as the tears rolled down her cheeks. âI think I need to move out of this house,â she said. âI canât sleep in this roomâin this bed. Do you know how many times Lori and I made love in this bed? How many times I told her how much I loved her? We used to complain about how small it was. I laughed and said she never gave me any room, but the truth is, I couldnât get close enough. Itâs like I wanted to be inside herâin her heart and her body. I canât sleep here anymore.â
âYouâll come live with me in my apartment at UGA.â
âMaybe for a little while, but not permanently. Your future is still ahead of you, and you donât need me getting in the way. My future just died, in every sense of that word.â
âLetâs take this one day at a time, okay? Iâm not going to sit here and offer you platitudes that are meaningless to you right now. All you need to do at this moment is get through to the next moment and the next after that. None of us are going to tell you how to grieve. Weâll be here for you and hold your hand.
